Trial of Oral Administration of 5-Fluorouracil in Cancer of the G-I Tract

Abstract

|
Oral administration of 5-FU was tried to 37 cases of cancer of the gastrointestinal tract proven by histopathologic study-23 cases of resection with 5-FU p.o. and 14 cases of 5-FU p.o. only since Jan. 1,972,at Dept. of Surgery, College of Medicine, Seoul National University.
5-FU from ampules was orally administered at a dose of 15mg/kg daily for 5 days and followed by; a weekly administration at the same dose level. One case of hepatoma(5-FU p.o. only group) showed decrease of tumor size by 50% with subjective improvement, and subjective improvement over 6 months of duration was seen in 10 of 23 cases of resection with 5-FU p.o. group and 6 of 14 cases of 5-FU p.o. only group. The toxicity of 5 -FU, when orally administered was less frequent than that of usual intravenous administration of 5-FU. The gastrointestinal toxicity was much frequent comparing to hematologic toxicity. This report will be continued for further study and follow-up.
